The difference between good or bad love poems is very subjective. There is a way to tell if a poem is bad, but there is no way to tell if it’s good. Different poems appeal to different people. If someone connects with the poem or feels the poem he can say that that poem is good even if it isn’t, but if someone doesn’t he can say that it’s bad, that’s why it’s very subjective. Here are some tips to avoid writing bad love poems:

There are no rules for poetry, there are different types of poetry with guidelines, but most of poetry is free verse and doesn’t have them. You should avoid writing in all caps or toggling upper and lower case, these things have no appeal and they take away from the image that the words are supposed to create. Don’t use cliché phrases to say that your love can’t be put to words and then go on to put that love in words.

Use punctuation in the right amount and avoid over or under use because this will lead to difficulty in reading and abstinence of flow. Proof and edit your love poems so there are no misspelled words or misuse of words. First read it like the reader, not like the writer and then you can proof and edit your poem by using the many tools the internet has provided.

You can use esoteric, but be sure that the reader can connect or understand the meaning either from your point of view or theirs. A poem that leaves the reader wondering without any sense is a bad poetry. The reader needs to be able to visualize the poem. He needs to be able to feel it, see it and just for a moment, live it. It’s important for the poem to look good on the page. Does it look esthetic, are some lines longer than others, does it look choppy, does it have a weird flow? These are all things to take into consideration.

Poetry that is good doesn’t have to rhyme, but if yours does, don’t go too far out to make it rhyme, for example not using one words standard pronunciation in order to rhyme with another word. Poetry that has this is not good poetry, only with exception to humor poetry. Remember that poetry is a story in a verse, give a plot to your words. Use analogies, metaphors, irony… Suck the reader in while telling him a story and give someone a journey of a lifetime.
