How to clean your Chinese antique pieces by hand

Cleaning your Chinese antiques by hand is the safest and most recommended method. Avoid using bleach infused or citrus scented detergents because the acid will harm the finish. All you need is a sink, warm water, thick towel, mild detergent, microfiber cloths and a wash cloth.

  • Start by placing a towel on the bottom of the sink in order to protect the piece in case of an accidentally fall.
  • Fill the sink with warm water, add a small amount of mild detergent.
  • Use the wash cloth to wash the piece gently. Avoid using any abrasives as they can damage the surface of your Chinese antiques.
  • Hand dry with microfiber cloth or let the antique air dry.

How to clean your Chinese antiques in the dishwasher

Cleaning your antiques in the dishwasher is not recommended because of high probability of cracking, weakening or chipping the finish. However, if this is the only option you have, use plain dishwasher detergent (avoid citrus or bleach formulas) and follow the steps below.

  • Load the dishwasher carefully, leaving plenty of free space between the pieces.
  • Turn on the dishwasher on the gentle cycle or the lowest and shortest heat cycle available.
  • Leave your Chinese antiques to air dry.
