Even though the use of torches has been significantly reduced due to the fact that today almost every phone features a flashlight, when it comes to tasks that need serious illumination, torches are still irreplaceable. Whether it’s for outdoor activities, such as camping and hiking, or repairing your car in the middle of the night, it can be an essential tool in both hazardous and everyday scenarios. If you don’t own a torchlight, you should highly consider getting one, as it is an inexpensive investment that can prove to be invaluable in many cases.

When it comes to buying a flashlight torch, the different types of materials, the weight, lighting output, the bulb type, battery type and lighting modes can make it difficult to find the right one for your needs at an affordable price. To get the best deal for your money, the smart thing to do is learn their basics. Let’s begin.

Most flashlights are made of anodised aluminium, aluminium or plastic. Aluminium is the more durable material and it’s more lightweight. Plastic is also decent but it’s not as great as the other two materials. Anodised aluminium adds an extra layer of aluminium oxide on the surface which protects the torch from scratches and scrapes. Aluminium and anodised aluminium torchlights are more expensive but they’re highly reliable and functional, even in extreme conditions.

That being said, the weight directly impacts the ergonomics of the torchlight – being able to conveniently carry it for extended time periods can be beneficial, especially for people who are involved in search and rescue parties, or people that frequently go on long hikes. Moreover, being able to maneuver it without straining your muscles can also come in handy when working on your car.

Furthermore, the type of bulbs the flashlight torch uses is essential to its performance. Nowadays, LED bulbs are the go-to option for most people as they offer significant advantages over incandescent light bulbs. LED bulbs are very durable, they don’t emit any heat and output more light. Their power is measured in lumens and it doesn’t take more than about 100 lumens to blind a person temporarily.

However, the lighting output also depends on the type of batteries the torchlight uses. Typically, you can choose between lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the superior choice but they’re more expensive. Moreover, you can choose between disposable and rechargeable batteries. Disposable batteries are the preferred choice if you use the torchlight occasionally, and rechargeable batteries are the better choice if you use it more frequently.

Lastly, the lighting modes can also make or break a torchlight. Depending whether you need a flashlight with a narrow long reach, a short wide beam, or maybe both – a torchlight that can alternate between the two types of beams is the ideal choice. In the end, it’s all about personal preference and needs, so there isn’t really a universal torch that’s the right one for everyone.
