MMA Gloves vs. Boxing Gloves: Fight Gear Compared

Boxing and MMA are full-contact combat sports where injuries can happen. Hands take the hit, so they need the right protection in the form of gloves. Gloved fists protect the fighter throwing the punch and the one taking it. Boxing and MMA hand gloves might seem familiar at first glance, but they’re for different types of fighting.

MMA (mixed martial arts) is a combat sport that combines boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other martial arts disciplines. Unlike boxing, where fighters mainly use their fists, MMA involves punches, kicks, takedowns, grappling and submissions.

Grappling, wrestling, and submissions require an open hand to grip and control your opponent. Fighters need to protect their hands from the impact of punches, and at the same time,  have the freedom to grip, grab and control their opponent for self-protection. Therefore, MMA fighting gloves are thinner and leave the fingers exposed. The open-finger shape makes them easy to distinguish from traditional boxing gloves.

A typical pair of protective MMA hand gloves has padding across the knuckles and a secure strap around the wrist to provide support during punches. The open-finger design also means fighters can move their fingers freely when grappling or attempting a submission.

MMA gloves are usually available in different weights and styles, depending on whether they’re being used for training, sparring or competition. Training gloves may have a little more padding for extra protection, while competition gloves tend to be lighter and more compact.

Boxing Gloves

Boxing is a combat sport centred on punching. Fighters use their fists to attack the head and body while defending against their opponent’s strikes. Unlike MMA, boxing does not involve kicks, takedowns, wrestling and submissions. Because the sport focuses almost entirely on punches, the gloves are designed specifically to protect the hands and cushion the impact of repeated strikes.

Boxing gloves are larger and more heavily padded than MMA gloves, with the fingers enclosed inside the glove. The rounded shape provides cushioning around the knuckles, which are the main point of contact when throwing punches. The enclosed design also helps protect the hands and fingers from injury during repeated impact.

A typical pair of boxing gloves has thick padding across the knuckles, with additional support around the back of the hand and wrist. A secure wrist strap helps keep the glove firmly in place, while the padded construction spreads the force of a punch across a larger area rather than concentrating it on the knuckles.

Unlike MMA gloves, boxing gloves don’t leave the fingers exposed. This is because boxers don’t need to grip, grab and manipulate their opponent during the fight. Instead, the enclosed shape allows the glove to provide more padding and protection while keeping the hand in a fist.

Boxing gloves are available in different weights and styles for training, sparring and competition. Heavier training gloves generally provide more padding for practice, while competition gloves are lighter and designed to meet specific rules and requirements.

Other Differences

As already mentioned, boxing and MMA gloves differ in size, padding and finger mobility. Beyond these differences, other features set them apart, like how they protect the hands.

Boxing gloves are intended for a sport where fighters throw punches repeatedly, so they prioritise cushioning and protection during striking. MMA gloves need to accommodate both striking and grappling. Therefore, they must protect without getting in the way of other techniques.

The wrist support can also differ between the two. Boxing gloves generally provide substantial wrist coverage and support to keep the wrist stable when a fighter punches. MMA gloves are more compact around the hand and wrist. They allow greater freedom of movement when transitioning between striking and grappling.

There is also a difference in how the gloves are used during training. Boxing gloves are commonly paired with hand wraps, which add another layer of support and help protect the hands and wrists during repeated punching. MMA fighters may also use hand wraps, but the gloves themselves need to accommodate grappling movements and striking.

Finally, rules and competition requirements influence the design. Boxing gloves must meet the requirements of boxing organisations and competitions; MMA gloves are designed to meet the rules of MMA. This means the gloves are not simply different versions of the same piece of equipment; each is built around the techniques, movements and demands of its respective sport.

Can You Hit Harder With Boxing Gloves or MMA Gloves?

There isn’t a simple answer to this question. The power of a punch comes mainly from your technique, speed, body mechanics and strength, rather than the type of glove you wear.

That said, boxing gloves can make it easier to throw powerful punches repeatedly. Their thicker padding provides more protection around the knuckles and hand, while the larger glove and wrist support can give you confidence when striking. Because boxing is centred around punching, the gloves are designed specifically for this purpose.

MMA gloves have less padding, punches can feel more direct. With less material between the fist and the target, the impact can feel sharper, even though this does not necessarily mean the punch itself has more force. The lighter design also means there is less weight around the hands.
