In today’s world of communication, practically everyone is connected with each other by electronic mail as well as with the specially developed applications for communication such as Viber and WhatsApp. But there are still some people who like to get their mail the old fashioned way, in their letterbox. Especially if you live in a house and have a large front yard closed with a gate, then you would surely like to have a nice fancy letterbox installed where the postman will gladly put your mail. And even if you do not have a large front yard gate, you still have an entrance door where you can instal a fancy letterbox.

So, how to choose a good letterbox? Well, the easiest way is to know what is offered on the market and to determine why you are getting it.

Standard letterboxes are very easy to spot; they are the ones you see on movies placed in front of the large gate with the family name written on them. Usually minimalistic and simple, standard letterboxes have a slot for slipping letters and other papery mail through it. In most cases these are small, so you will not be able to receive large envelopes in them. However, it all depends on your purpose. Maybe you are not the type of person that receives large envelopes regularly.

However, if you are that person, then you should get something bigger. Have in mind the mail you would be receiving; large envelopes, magazines, newspapers and similar. It is always better if they are not simply placed on your door mat but secured in a letterbox, right? Your letterbox should have the following characteristics:

  • A draft excluder – all modern letterboxes have it, so if the one you like has a flap for cutting down on drafts, do not hesitate.
  • Wall mounting – it is important that the letterbox has options; you can either mount it on the wall or put it standing on a stick right next to the door . This way you will be able to choose how you want it placed in accordance with your overall outdoor design.

A parcel box is another option. It usually comes with a lock and it is most suitable for people that do a lot of online shopping and receive a lot of packages. It is best if they are wall-mounted, and if you choose to get one, make sure it is securely mounted and it has a very strong lock, since they are often a target of thieves.

Colour and material will range depending on the seller as well as the overall outdoor design. After all, you do want the letterbox to blend with the surrounding environment, don’t you?
