The Age Of The Tractor – The next thing you need to check when buying a used tractor is its age. The best way to know this is to find its serial number and look it up online. Aside from the date of manufacture, the serial number will show what kind of technology and features the tractor has.

Quick Estimation – If you have a little experience and a good eye, you can see if the condition of a tractor matches its price. Look for oil leaks, missing tractor parts or wear tires and other things that can help you determine the real value of the truck.

Hydraulic System – The hydraulic system, also known as a three-point hitch, is the most important part to consider when buying a used tractor. It has three arms which extend from the rear of the tractor and are hydraulically operated to lift and hold in place, in combination with various attachments. There are still tractors for sale without hydraulic systems, such as the older John Deeres and Farmalls models. Although such models may be perfect for your application, it is better to look for a tractor with a three-point hitch, as it is more durable and ultimately, a more efficient option.

Check The Engine – Assuming that you are not an expert, there are still some basic things you can check which do not require a lot of knowledge. Start up the engine and see how it works. If it doesn’t star right away, do not buy the tractor. Its condition may only get worse once you buy it, especially in bad weather conditions. An engine in poor condition may start very easily in warm weather and run smoothly, so it is suggested to look tractors for sale in normal weather condition. There is a wide range of tractors for sale on the market and you will surely find a model and make that will best match all your requirements.

In addition, do not forget to check:

  • Oil Leaks – Always check for any oil leaks on the engine as they can be a huge problem. If the tractor was recently repainted or cleaned, it will be harder to determine, but leave it in idle-state for a while and see if any leaks appear.
  • The Tires – Check the tires, rear and front and twice if needed. Look for any cuts and tears in their sidewalls and not only for the amount of wear.
  • The Transmission – Do not forget to check the transmission and the rear-axle lube levels. If the fluid is milky colored, it means that there is water in the oil which can cause major problems in the future.
